History: The Seed of Sound Pod
by Peggy Black

My path to the awareness of the power of sound as a healing modality was through my own personal verbal and sacred release of repressed emotions.

We have not been taught how to process our emotions appropriately, in a healthy manner.

Our society has given us a template of suppression. Think of the times that children who are distressed are told to be quiet or even "shut up."  Think of a time for yourself when you experienced strong emotions and instead of expressing the emotion you put a smile on your face, or you distracted yourself in some way to avoid the feelings. You were brave, stoic--and denied your emotions. What happens to those emotions? They are repressed. They are stored in the tissues, bones, and cells of our bodies. We are taught this and become skilled at repressing our emotions, not honoring our feelings.

Sounds, tones, and chanting:   I knew about these on some level. I've screamed in the car when I was angry or frustrated. However, I was still unaware of the use of sound as a tool for self balancing and self renewal. I am tactile and visual. I had been told many times that I sang off key, so I was self conscious about singing or making sounds of any kind in front of others.

In 1994, I experienced the ending of my marriage. I was so distraught and in such emotional pain, it was difficult to function. The pain was so real I could no longer remain numb, nor was I able to repress the extreme feelings. So at the age of 52, I realized that I must be responsible--and thus began the process of healing my emotional body and allowing these emotions to be felt.

I would go into my prayer room and offer whatever emotions I was feeling to be transformed and released. It was extremely painful, as old emotions literally racked through my body. I made sounds, I cried sounds, I screamed sounds, I moaned sounds, and sometimes I just make sounds that didn't sound human.  I realized that there were years and years of stuffing the anger, the sadness, the regrets, the sorrow; it was time to allow myself to totally feel everything.

In the process of allowing myself to feel, I began to release these old issues and heal my emotional body. It was intense. Being able to express my emotions through sounds and bring these emotions to the Divine Source as my gift, my sacred ritual, offering them up for transformation, felt perfect. It just needed to be done. There was no question or doubt. This was a sacred act, each time asking for more Light, more awareness, more guidance--surrendering to the moment and knowing that my highest good was being served.

This emotional release work went on for several months. I share this as a frame-work in which I opened…………… to begin to joyfully and willingly channel the sacred sounds.

One evening during this healing period, I joined a small group of people where the idea was to offer healthful energy to each other. So people gathered and sounded as they placed their hands on someone who was on a massage table. The sounds were fairly soft, yet the vibrations in the room were powerful. I felt as if I had put on a pair of shoes that fit perfectly.

I went to visit my mother and wanted to try this new method on her. She was very receptive. With her on the massage table, I said my prayer asking for guidance, anchored myself, placed my hands on her shoulders, and made a sound. It was incredible; the sounds were powerful, very loud, and just flowed from my mouth.  Some of them were too intense for my mother to tolerate, yet others seemed to be very soothing. When I was finished, her first response was, "That's the weirdest thing you have ever done to me. I don't understand what happened, but I don't hurt anywhere."  We both were energized and excited. She was pain free and relaxed. I was astonished, puzzled, and thrilled.

A friend willingly allowed me to experiment with the sounds again. When I finished the experiment, she gave me direct and definite feed back: "That was amazing! It was like clear core sounds, almost unearthly, that melted through layers of my tightness.  This is what you need to be doing NOW!"  My response was "I am not willing to make these kinds of sounds in public."

Soon after my few adventures with sound, I had an astrological reading. There was one 'gem' the astrologer shared with me that certainly surprised yet pleased me. She said something about my Saturn return and the soul's gifts. She then said, "Did you know that you are a sound healer?"  I begin to weep.  I said, "I've been making intense, unusual sounds for a few months now."  "Well you're right on time." This information was validating for me and opened the door. The whole experience was insightful and soul-stirring.

From that moment, I began to investigate, inquire, read, and gather information about this phenomenon, this idea of healing with sound. I began to remember. I believe everyone intuitively knows the power of their own voice to heal and rebalance their body/mind/emotions.

Realizing how powerful my own personal expression of my emotions was for my healing, I wanted to offer a safe, supportive space for others to allow their sounds to be genuinely expressed. This was the birth of the idea of "Sound Pod."

The goal of creating Sound Pod was to invite others to come together in a comfortable environment and with clear guidance and direction, allowing each person to express sounds in an uninhibited way. It was to be a gathering of like-minded people who meet regularly in an informal manner, with the intention to explore their own vocal sounds, pure tones, free sounds, and chants. They would learn and become aware of the conscious use of sounds to relieve stress and clear blockages in their body, creating a sense of well-being and joyful expansion. SOUND POD offers the opportunity to discover the power of sounds generated from within. This gathering is playful, powerful, fun, and experimental.

The exciting thing that is happening is the expansion of this service and this idea. There are now Sound Pods that are gathering around the globe. The Sound Pods are hosted on a regular basis, and they offer the community at large an opportunity to work on a personal level of healing and balance, as well as a global level of healing and balance.

When people are willing to express themselves through the conscious use of sounds, express their emotions through sounds, they will be willing to express themselves in words: to speak their truth.

They will find their authentic voice. They will not be silent. They will be heard. Things will change.

Sound Pod offers a personal and a planetary service of honoring authentic expression of emotions through sound, which allows the space for healing, wholeness, balance, and transformation within the individual and within the collective.

When one is uplifted and healed, all are uplifted and healed.
